Soccer Mom Stomp

about

I wrote the music for this a long time ago ... in the mid-to-late '90s. It was political back then--just a different kind of political than it is now. I couldn't remember all the lyrics from that older song and don't have a copy anywhere, so I updated them.

Though "soccer mom" has a bit of a derogatory connotation (it did back then, too) it is also as relevant now as it was 20 years ago. The so-called soccer mom vote is as coveted by pols now as it was back then. The song is not really about voting, per se. I guess it's about standing up to be counted, if it's about anything.

Funnily enough, my original version was picked up by an online radio station in Germany. The DJ contacted me and asked me if I wouldn't mind if he played my song during his radio show (this was before podcasts, too). I said, "Sure!" Then I thought about it and wondered whether he knew what the song was about. This was the early days of the Internet and Google wasn't really a thing yet. I wasn't sure "soccer mom" translated across languages and geographical regions. I thought maybe the DJ thought the song was a pro futbol song (lol). I felt compelled to tell him the song wasn't really about "soccer." He wrote back and said, "Yeah, I know. I just like it."

So, there you go. I hope you like it, too. Sadly, that other version is lost or maybe banished to the deep archives of the Interweb.

lyrics

Listen.
You can hear the thrumming.
i know this ain’t the show that you bought
and that you’re terminally bored.

But look out!
‘cause the end is really coming.
But it ain’t gonna go down like you thought--
invaded by some phantom horde.

[chorus]
When the dream they spawned that day
is all but gone
will you watch it die
with a fight or (with) a yawn?

The mic is on
and it’s pointing at you.
This ain’t rehearsal.
You're on.
It’s your cue!

Wake up--
all you brokers and you yokels!
The writing on the Wall (is)
black sharpie on the White House lawn.

Take up
the charge that you were given
when you swore to uphold an oath
and not to be a sham king’s pawn.

[chorus]

...

The situation is complicated
but your benediction is confiscated
You’re not the victim
you’re the perpetrator.
And you are not absolved!
No no, you are not absolved
from a thing (not this thing, baby).

about

Crush Limbo North Bergen, New Jersey

Crush Limbo is the stage name of NY-NJ-based musician Colm Clark.

It's bedroom pop meets Tin Pan Alley -- a world where glam gets it on with André Popp, teasing midlife symphonies from tear-shaped guordalins.

And in the grand tradition of Sondheim, Wonder, Bowie, and the Beatles — melody is key, baby, and tunes are where it's at.
